Born 1857 London.

Enlisted 1877 into Army Service Corps number T1463. Served Anglo-Zulu War 1879 and Egypt 1882. Discharged 1889.

Enlisted for IY 1901, discharged August 1902.

Died April 1916, London.

The Egypt and Zulu War medals were sold in 1983 by Hamilton 's Coin & Medal Despatch

Peter Read Olverson, from Liverpool.

Wounded Basberg 16-02-1902 while serving with Pom-Poms.

Entitled to KSA medal with two clasps.

Served WW1 as Sgt 52248 RA. Awarded Military Medal, London Gazette 19-2-1917. Entitled to 1914-15 Star trio.

Discharged 1919 to enlist in Royal Marines Labour Corps.

Queen's South Africa - Winner Royal Garrison Artillery

Queen's South Africa - Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901

69774 GNR W WINNER 15th COY S.D., R.G.A.

William Winner from Gooderstone, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. Served in South Africa dfrom December 1899 to July 1900 when he was part of the small RGA detail sent to China, entitled to China 1900 without clasp. He then returned to South Africa in 1901, one of eight RGA reservists to do so. Discharged December 1901. His sevice is commemorated on the war memorial in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Served WW1 as Gunner 281575 RGA serving with the BEF from 1916 to 1918, demobilised 1919. Entitled to BWM & VM.

Queen's South Africa - Orange Free State, Defence of Ladysmith, South Africa 1902

QSA: 130 Pte T. CURTIS K.R.R.C.
BWM: F.231243 T. CURTIS A.C.1. R.N.A.S.

Tom Curtis from Andover, Hampshire. Served with 2nd bn in the Defence of Ladysmith, was invalided or returned to England then returned to South Africa in 1902 with the 4th battalion.

Served WW1 with 4th bn (number 20732) and 72nd Provisional Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment from 1914 to 1916, discharged due to sickness, issued with Silver War Service badge. Enlisted RNAS 1917, AC1 F231243 transferred to RAF 01-04-1918, discharged 1920.

BWM is sole medal entitlement for WW1.

Lived Horsham, West Sussex worked as a postman. Awarded Imperial Service Medal in 1935.

Died 1939.

6150 Pte W STEPHENS GLOUC: REGt

Williams Stephens from Alverston, Bristol. A member of the 3rd militia battalion who volunteered to served with the 2nd battalion in South Africa.

Taken prisoner at Dewetsdorp 23-11-1900 when the Boers under Christian de Wet captured the town. He was released on 05-12-1900.

Entitled to a King's South Africa medal.

Albert Charles, born Newcastle on Tyne.

Captured on 30-07-1901 at in the Hekpoort Valley, details of which are covered in "British Surrenders (WO108-372):

"[2526: 2554-2737] a farm and postal agency in the South African Republic (Krugersdorp district; Gauteng), 25 km north of Krugersdorp. ..On 30 July 1901 during a routine sweep a patrol of four men of the 1st Dragoons were captured by four Boers while descending a "rough side of a high kopje.".

Served WW1, home service only.

Died 1946 Surbiton, Surrey.

Ralph William, born King Williamstown, Cape Colony in 1876. Served Rhodesia Horse, Salisbury Field Force in 1896 and Garrison Volunters in 1897.

Enlisted November 1900, discharged medically unfit August 1901. Enlisted Canadian Scouts in August 1901, discharged March 1902.

QSA returned 1906 and a new medal was re-issued in 1937, hence the unusual but entirely official naming.

QSA: 5562 Pte H. BATES RIFLE BRIGADE

Henry Bates, born Bethnal Green, London.

Served with the mounted infantry, was wounded on 21-05-1901 at Zandrivierspoort:

"a farm, with post office, at the southern end of the poort through which the Zand River cuts the Sandrivierberge in the South African Republic (Waterberg district; Northern), 45 km north-west of Nylstroom. Variants: Zand River Poort (name of post office 1896-1952); Sandrivierspoort (Afrikaans spelling used on the 1: 250,000 map and name of post office since 3 November 1952). On 21 May 1901, the columns of Lt-Col. A.E. Wilson and Maj H. McMicking attacked Asst Cmdt-Gen C.F. Beyers's commando on the farm forcing it to take refuge in the poort itself. McMicking returned to the farm and entrenched,"

Discharged from the Reserves in May 1914. No WW1 service traced.

Bertie Frederick Oscar, from Brixton, London.

Served as Corporal 9279 2nd (Wiltshire) Company, 1st bn Imperial Yeomanry. Posted missing-released place unknown 15-06-1900.

Served in the Provisional Transvaal Constabulary. Enlisted into Steinaecker's Horse on 27-11-1901, discharged 03-01-1903.

Entitled to QSA with Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal.

Letters and two photographs were sold on e-Bay in February 2014. One letter written in October 1920 from his widow advising "Will" of Bertie's death in Johannesburg.
