South African Researchers

To assist you in your research of participants of the Anglo-Boer War we are pleased to list the following researchers based in South Africa. If you contact them please mention The Register.

Gordon Bickley email.

I am available to obtain copies of Military Service Records for South African service men and women for the period 1913 to the 1980's.

As a regular visitor to the South African Defence Force Documentation Centre over the past 20 years I have a detailed knowledge of the records held, and what is available, plus a good working relationship with the Archive staff.

I served in WW2 and was Secretary of the Military Medal Society of SA from 1976 to 2005, accordingly am fairly well grounded in South African Military and Medallic history.

Service records for the South African Defence Force are held at the SANDF Documentation Centre in Pretoria. Records for the South African Constabulary (Boer War up to 1908) are at the SA National Archives in Pretoria and Bloemfontein. Other South African military service records, dating before 1913, are held in Britain.

Search fee charges are fair and each individual service record for WW1 will generally cost from R20-00 to about R80-00, and the same for WW2, depending upon the extent of the record, plus postage and copying at cost. Full details of the charges and description of service records which can be accessed are available on request.

(I make extensive use of my own personal research library and database, built up over 40 years to include additional information and pictures wherever possible. This additional information is not found on the official service files. (No other South African Military Researcher provides this extra information).

I am now a retired Colonel (Group Captain) who served with the South African Air Force for 32 years as a Chief Air Traffic Controller and later as a Senior Staff Officer with the Directorate Command and Control Systems at SAAF Headquarters in Pretoria. I have been a collector and researcher for the past 45 years (researcher for the past 28 years) and have a very good working relationship with the staff of the SANDF Military Records Archives. I have written many articles for military journals and have provided research information for Military books (Honour the Air Forces by Michael Maton; The Men who went to Warsaw by Lawrence Isemonger; 85 Years of the South African Air Force by Winston Brent; The Aegean Pirates-The History of 15 Squadron SAAF by Dr Stefaan Bouwer and Dr Gerald Thompson, to name a few) published both locally and overseas. I also address the various Genealogy Societies and Historical Societies in South Africa on my research work. I was also responsible for supplying all the details of the South African Pilots who flew with the RAF in the Battle of Britain, to Donald Insall Associates for the manufacture of the South African bronze panels for the Battle of Britain Memorial on the Victoria Embankment in London.

I research fees are charged at £15-00 per name researched. This fee excludes the locating of medal Citations, photocopies, airmail postage & packing. I use the SWIFT method for payments.
